Gary Clark Jr.

Virtuoso Guitarist, Singer & Songwriter On the title track of “This Land,” Gary Clark Jr. is staking his claim to a literal place on the map, settling in and declaring: “I told you there goes the neighborhood… This is mine now, legit.” It’s a song with real-life roots in how Clark and his family have traded up in turf in his native Texas and been met with some suspicious glances upon move-in. And if it sounds like he’s had some practice in defiantly ignoring expectations about where he ought to live, well, that’s something he’s been doing musically his whole life. He’s a rock-and-soul omnivore who can survey the entire landscape of American music — not just the blues with which he’s so often associated, but reggae, punk, R&B and hip-hop, too — and say: This land was made for you and me. He owns it all on This Land, his third studio album for Warner Bros. Records, which is sure to be seen as a breakthrough in establishing just how much stylistic variation Cl...

Morrison’s musical legacy began in postwar Belfast with the band Them. His matchless vocal and songwriting talents produced instant classics such as the much covered ‘Gloria’ and ‘Here Comes The Night’. Those talents found full astonishing range in Morrison’s solo career which transitioned him into another realm of artistic brilliance. Awards and accolades – a knighthood, a Brit, an OBE, an Ivor Novello, 6 Grammys, honourary doctorates from Queen’s University Belfast and the University...

Vansire, BOYO, Stirr Lightly

Vansire is the project of Josh Augustin and Samuel Winemiller, two high school friends from Minnesota that began recording music together after meeting on their school’s drumline. An unabashedly DIY affair, all of their music is created in basements and bedrooms, self-released to a burgeoning online scene of bedroom pop listeners and creators. Three years of grassroots hype has seen Vansire grow from a summer side-project to a legitimate musical name with wide-ranging collaborations and multiple releases. April 2018 saw the release of their album Angel Youth. Augustin’s ambient synth washes, Dilla-informed percussive sensibilities and bookish lyricism combine with Winemiller’s sweeping guitar landscapes and warbled, Bibio-esque tones to form a wholly unique sound. Aided by Isaac Winemiller’s easy going funk-infused bass stylings, the music is a sonic reflection of the Midwest’s driftless region which they call home. Joining them, BOYO is the eclectic, psych-pop brainchild ...

Godsmack Boston-area hard rock group Godsmack infuse a sound influenced by Alice in Chains and Metallica with mystical imagery and percussive tribal rhythms. Part of the late-’90s post-grunge/nu-metal wave, the Lawrence, Massachusetts quartet debuted with a dark and menacing self-titled effort that took cues from Alice in Chains, especially front-man Sully Erna’s vocal similarities with Layne Staley. Through the decades, they matured to incorporate classic rock and heavy metal touches on mid-era releases like The Oracle and IV, with Erna taking more vocal cues from Metallica’s James Hetfield. Following Erna’s solo projects in the late 2010’s, Godsmack reinvigorated themselves with the polished When Legends Rise.

Daryl Hall & John Oates

Starting out as two devoted disciples of earlier soul greats, Daryl Hall & John Oates are soul survivors in their own right. Justin Moore has grown from an aspiring songwriter into a chart-topping powerhouse and his stellar new album, “Late Nights and Longnecks” is proof that he’s still the same country boy at heart. Tipping its cap to Alan Jackson and George Strait, the record is Moore’s most traditional-sounding collection to date, a no-frills, portrait of small-town life and big-time dreams that’s not afraid to let its hair down and party at the end of a hard day’s work. Justin Moore will showcase this album that’s equal parts celebration and reflection and more when he performs live at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino at THE ROW on Friday, Aug. 23.  Moore knows a thing or two about hit records. After signing to The Valory Music Co., an imprint of Big Machine Label Group, he landed his first country #1 with “Small Town USA,” the breakout single off his 2009 self-titled debut. The record went platinum, as did its 2011 follow-up, “Outlaws Like Me,” which yielded yet another #1 singl...

It Looks Sad., Common Mishap, Heartless Wilderness

It Looks Sad. have changed a lot since forming in 2012. Their 2014 self-titled EP melded the overcast day at the beach sensibilities of Surfer Blood, with the murky alt-emo that bands like Turnover were edging into popularity at the time. But the two songs that followed on 2015’s Kaiju 7”, the only music the Charlotte, NC band would release for over two years, planted them at a crossroads. On Kaiju’s first song, “Creature,” singer/songwriter Jimmy Turner yelps the hook, “I got some things to do / but I don’t wanna do ‘em / I got some things to say / I will never say ‘em, to your face,” intersecting shoreline slackerism with emo desperation. The b-side, “Nagoya,” is more akin to the emo-gaze niche their to-be labelmates The Spirit of the Beehive would soon nestle into, dipping in and out of focus like the 2015 Beehive hit “Natural Devotion.” Each song presented a sensible direction for an emo-leaning band to take during peak revival-era, but It Looks Sad. ...
